The Lawyer (The Dalton Brothers 1) - Page 53

“I have news,” I said to Charlize, standing outside my building after Dominick dropped me off. “It’s top secret—you can’t share it even if there’s wine or a gun is being held to your head—but I have to tell someone before I explode.”

I couldn’t go inside and talk to him. Every word would be caught on camera, and I just wanted this moment of privacy before I went upstairs and got ready to film.

“Does it have to do with Presley Jordan? Because I was texting you all night, and your MIAness has made me CRAYness.”

“You know those pics are fake, and that alert couldn’t have been further from the truth.”

“I figured. Homegirl does not have the right skin tone for pink—no offense. Besides, I know you’re not moving on that fast from Daddy Dominick.”

I laughed, walking on the curb that framed the side of the building, balancing on it like it was a beam. “There’s no moving on. We’re together.”

“Whaaa? Damn, I’m happy that man finally came to his senses. He was about to earn himself a slap for being so ridiculously stupid. When did this all go down?”

“Last night, I darted out of the club and went to his house.”

“You’ve officially scored yourself the hottest man I’ve ever seen in a suit. So, how’s this all going to play out? I mean, you’re on camera, and that hasn’t changed.”

I paused the pacing, teetering on my heels. “We’re going to keep it a secret for as long as we can. If that means date nights at his house, I definitely have no objections to that. As for outings”—my chest tightened a little as I thought of the upcoming events I had, things I wanted to share with him, like the red carpet for opening night, the photo shoot I’d soon be having for the sunglasses deal—“we’ll figure it out as we go.”

“Honey, those are just details. It doesn’t take away from how happy you sound right now.”

The smile was already there, his words causing it to widen even more.

“I am, like almost-tearing-up kind of happy.”

“You know that means another celebration.” He giggled. “It’s a hell of a good thing they have a lot of tequila in this state because I see years of skinny margaritas in our future.”

My eyes closed, a warmth filling every part of me.

The move had brought some heartache—leaving my friends and family in Boston, having a falling-out with my sister, the world thinking I’d slept with Presley Jordan—but it had brought so many wonderful things into my life as well.

“I’m lucky to have you,” I said, the tears making their way down my cheeks.

“No, babycakes, I’m the lucky one.”
