After one last kiss and hug, Emmett hops into the Jeep and gives me his famous wink once he closes the door, mouthing “I love you” as he starts it up.
Haylee wraps her arms around me in a big bear hug as they drive off. “We’ve got this! They won’t be too far away, and plus, you and my brother are grossly cute and have the rest of your lives to make us want to gag with your cuteness. Now, what do you say we head inside an
d binge scary movies and eat our weight in junk food.”
I laugh at her and turn around once the Jeep is out of sight. “Why, Hails, I thought you’d never ask.”
M y first day of senior year is strange without my brother and Emmett. I’ve never attended high school without them. At least Haylee will be there with me. And, of course, Emmett is with me even if he isn’t physically here. I’ll miss sneaking kisses at my locker and Emmett taking fries off my tray after he finishes his entire lunch but before I could eat half of mine. I’m thankful that soon enough we’ll be back together.
As I pull up in front of Haylee’s house to pick her up, I can’t help but smile thinking of our conversation this morning.
EMMETT: Happy first day of school, baby! Kick ass.
ME: You know what I did this morning while thinking of you?
EMMETT: Whoa, baby, is it the same thing I did?
ME: Perv. I watched the sunrise and remembered sitting out here with you last year.
EMMETT: Yep, that’s exactly what I did too. Not anything else – God I love your dirty mind though.
ME: And for the record, I did that too.
EMMETT: And you’re now just telling me?! What a tease!!
ME: Need to get ready and then pick up Hails.
EMMETT: Love you, Cupcake! xo
ME: Forever and always. XOXO
ONE YEAR EARLIER…
Emmett and Haylee had spent the night at our place before the first day of school. It was the boys’ first day of senior year and Haylee’s and my junior year. I woke up that morning to Emmett leaning down next to my side of the bed, rubbing my cheek with the back of his hand. “Good morning, beautiful,” he whispered, kissing my forehead.
As I slowly woke, realizing this wasn’t a dream, he put his forefinger to his lips to tell me to be quiet before pointing over to his sleeping sister. “Shhh, I want to take you somewhere.”
Climbing out of bed, I grabbed a hoodie off the chair and took his hand in mine. Emmett led me downstairs quietly to the front door.
“Where are we going, crazy? We have to get ready for school,” I tried to protest.
Emmett smirked, grabbing the blanket off the umbrella stand, and escorted me out the front door to the porch swing. Emmett took a seat, then pulled me into his arms. It was easily my favorite spot in the entire world. There was no other place I would rather be than with him. He covered us with the blanket as I leaned my back to his front, even though once the sun rose, it would be too hot for anything covering us.
“What are we doing out here?”
Em smiled before leaning closer to me and confessed, “I want to watch the sunrise with you. Today starts another chapter in our lives. I can’t wait till we are both out of this town starting our future. I’ve got big plans for us, Cupcake. One day…” He paused. “I’m gonna put a ring on this finger.” He laced his fingers with mine, then brushed his lips against where a diamond would be.
“We’re both going to get to UPenn, graduate, get married, and have two kids and a dog. You can bake all you want at your own little bakery you’re going to have, but I might need to buy stock in a gym to keep off the weight from eating your treats. Although, I love eating your treats.” He gave me a playful wink, making me giggle and slap his chest.
“I know all that will happen—we just have to get through these next two years and we are on our way.”
Looking up at him, I was no longer sleepy. I felt all of his love, and I couldn’t help but smile. I turned my body toward his and placed my palm to his cheek. “How did I get so lucky to have you in my life?”
He leaned his forehead against mine. “I’m the lucky one, Cupcake, and I hope I never have to go a day without you in my life.”
I responded before placing a kiss on those beautiful lips of his. “Forever and always.”
Then I had to pull away, knowing that if I didn’t, we would potentially not only miss the sunrise, but get caught by my parents in a position I didn’t want them to catch us in. I spun back around to snuggle up to Emmett, and we watched the beautiful sunrise. I couldn’t wait to spend the rest of my life watching all of the sunrises with this man.
