At my words, he nods. “Yes, we need to move now, clearly Sheffield is becoming more aggressive in his attack. If you would have still been in that car, Maximo would be in charge right now.”
I can’t tell if Vito is pleased or not by that. He’d never want Maximo in charge, but right now I think he wants me dead more than he hates my brother.
I don’t blame him.
But heavy is the crown at the top of this family, and everything I‘ve done, every sacrifice I made has been to protect this family.
That includes hurting Winter, in the past and in the near future.
I know what I have to do, Maximo understands what it means to be at the top too.
Vito doesn’t, at least not anymore, and it’s why he’ll never have my spot.
He can’t make the big sacrifices, he’d rather let his heart rule him.
Even more so after Sophia was killed.
“We’re going to have to set up a trap for him,” I say finally, tapping my fingers on my desk.
His lips twitch downward in the slightest motion. “And how do we do that?” he asks, but I have a feeling he already knows where I’m going with this just from the way his eyes narrow slightly.
