Daria nods her head in agreement, “Pretty much.” She picks up her wine glass and takes a swig. “All the dresses I’ve picked out were made for whores, the hairstyle I picked out was unruly and I need to consider ordering a special flat iron for the day if I want to look nice. My honeymoon is too short and the location is in a trash country.” She says it all with sarcasm but I can also hear the frustration in her tone.
“Like I said, a complete bitch. I don’t know why Uncle Vize still keeps her around.”
“Probably because she’s the mother to his legitimate child,” Daria mutters.
“Eh, my dad cut my mom loose real quick and she mothered all five of his children,” Isabella drawls.
Daria rolls her eyes.
“And your groom? How is that end going?” I don’t know why I ask the question when I know that Lorenzo and Daria’s marriage is just an arrangement. But I’m also aware this is the closest thing to a normal conversation I’ve had in a while.
“Oh, Lorenzo just lets the wedding planner do everything for him and anything else he defers to Polo.”
“Which has to just be fun for him, right?” Isabella doesn’t bother to smother her sarcasm, and when Daria shoots her a glare, she only shrugs her shoulders. “You know I always tell it how it is, little cousin.”
Daria lets out a long sigh.
I want to ask what the complete story is with her and Polo. I know that there’s a simmering attraction in the air anytime the two are in the same vicinity. And there’s no way they’re unaware that the other always keeps an eye on them.
But Daria is engaged to Polo’s boss.
An arrangement neither one of them can get out of without repercussions, from what I understand.
“I don’t want to talk about Polo or Lorenzo,” Daria grumbles before switching the topic.
Conversation continues to flow easily between us, even as we switch to much more mundane topics. And I find myself laughing more often than not. By the time the session is over, I’ve definitely decided that I like Isabella, and Daria is even nicer than I first thought.
A wave of sadness hits me when the day is over and Enzo ushers me into the car.
Back to hell.
