“I don’t want to hold either of you back,” Alex says.
“You’re a bigger man than most, bro,” I say. “Most men wouldn’t react like this. Most men would want to take me out.”
Alex grins. “We’ve sparred before. You think I’m that stupid?”
I shake my head. “If you wanted to lay it on me right now, I’d let you. I wouldn’t do a damn thing. She’s your sister, and I know I should’ve told you sooner. I know I should’ve fought harder. But I meant what I said. I’ll never let anything happen to her. I only want the best for her. I….”
I love her, I almost add, but something holds me back, maybe the thought she might not say it in return, not in front of Alex.
Alex moves forward, clapping me on the arm, then he brings me in for a hug. I return the gesture, wondering when the last time we hugged was. Maybe after a fight.
“I’d never want to hurt you, Ben. And I know you’re telling the truth. I know you’ll always protect her.”
