When We Dance - Page 60

“They are both at the hotel. And you know that’s a rental.”

I jerk my focus back to him.

Is it me, or do I notice resentment in his voice?

Staggering on my feet, I close the space between us.

“Why are you the only one here?”

“They don’t know I’m here.”

My eyebrows go up.”

“They don’t?”

“Nah-huh.”

His eyes go down, checking my dress. Or legs. Or chest. Although his stance says that he is miles away from me.

“How did you find me?” I ask.

“I bribed one of the bouncers at the club, and he gave the address of the woman you were with.”

“Em?”

He tips his chin down.

“They could’ve done the same thing,” I say. “Why didn’t you do it the first time you came to the club?”

“Kai didn’t want to.”

“Kai…”

“Yes. Kai.”

“He didn’t want to find me?”

“He knew you had left with that group. We all knew it. He didn’t want to pursue you any further.”

I swallow.

“What did you expect?” he asks.

“You know what I expected?”

I finger his chest.

“I expected you to act normally,” I say.

He laughs. For the first time in many hours, I see him smiling and laughing.

“That’s not how it works, cariño.”

“Well. You’re maybe right. But I don’t like to get whiplash from your different personalities. If I knew you’d be so cold with me, I would’ve stayed home. I mean… At the hotel. And you––all of you––would’ve come to me after finishing your business dealings. I’m not your domestic partner. Understood?”

His eyes narrowed at me with an amused grin.

“Don’t give me that smile,” I say, pushing my finger against his hard chest.
