of this. Or that you’re staying positive, at any rate. Being used
as a human pawn is inexcusable.”
Haley pressed her lips together tightly. She didn’t want to
think of herself that way. She didn’t want to think of her dad
using her. She’d made the decision of her own free will, even
if the situation was untenable.
Amy got a devious look in her eyes. “I want to meet her. I
want to see what the lady dragon is like. The one who keeps
you under lock and key in her castle. It’s basically like a dark
fairy tale.”
“More like a horror movie,” Elva corrected.
“Does she have a piano?” Amy asked on an eyeroll. “She
probably does. Stashed away somewhere. Houses like that
always do.”
“I never even thought to ask.”
Both her friends gave her incredulous looks. “You’re a
music major, your favorite thing in the whole world is the
piano, and you never asked?” Elva shook her head. “You need
to ask.”
“Okay. I will. I’ll ask Jean or Mary. They’ll know.”
Amy giggled. “Sit your bodyguard down and treat him to a
concert. Maybe that will soften him up. You might even get
the big beast to shed a tear.” Her face paled and she shut her
mouth quickly. “Oh shit,” she hissed. “Does said big brute
have a snake tattoo on his neck and an even bigger one with
the jaws open peeking out from a really ugly slash scary
buzzcut?”
“Fuck,” Haley hissed, tensing up. She didn’t have to turn
around to know that Snake was bearing down on them. “That’s
him.”
