"Shit, boss, I bet you're ready to go home and get it on with the missus," Dave says, slapping Todd on the back as he passes by him. His eyes are roaming the club and I know he's probably looking for Angie. The two are practically attached at the hip. I've been keeping my eye on them more than the others in the club since they're always whispering and sneaking off to the back. So far I've only walked in on Angie blowing Dave in the break room. I'm starting to believe the only thing going on with them is an affair since I heard from Amarie that the club has a no fraternization between employees rules. So it would explain the sneaking around.
"Nah." Todd shakes his head. "I've got to stay here and handle up on some paperwork."
"Again?" Amarie asks, walking over with empty glasses in her hand. The violet dress she has on tonight is cute, but the look on her face is deadly. She raises a brow at Todd.
His body tenses up for a moment before he relaxes, giving Amarie a fake smile. He pushes a hand through his dark hair. "Some of us don't have parents who send us money from France."
Amarie scoffs, rolling her eyes. "You think I'd be working here if I was a trust fund baby?" she asks with a snort.
Todd shrugs, his eyes dragging over her from head to toe. "I don't know, you're definitely getting money elsewhere with that jacket." He nods to her thick cheetah print coat.
She narrows her eyes at him and the amusement in the air seems to disappear. "A girl has her secrets," she says after a moment. "And she knows not to divulge them, or be stupid enough to get caught." She leans forward, poking Todd on the nose with an aggressive touch that has him flinching away.
Amarie lips twitch into a mean smile before relaxing into something softer. I blink, looking between her and Todd. She spins around, catching my gaze. "I'm off to wreck the city. See you later, Chéri." She gives me a wink before heading for the exit.
The thick tension leaves with her.
I track her with my eyes until she exits the door and turn my attention back to Todd. His lips are pulled into a tight frown and he shakes his head when he finds me watching him. "I swear that girl is up to some shady shit. I don't care what kind of secrets she has, they can't be legal with the money I know she keeps on her."
My interest piques at that. I've been watching Amarie as well and there's a lot that doesn't add up with her. Some moments she's as sweet as pie and the next she's as ferocious as a rabid dog. Her clothes are extremely expensive like Todd pointed out. When I'd asked her about her acrylic nails, she'd told me the price of them and frankly, I didn't know people spent so much on their nails. Like Dave and Angie, I spot her sneaking off sometimes. But whenever I try to follow her, I always end up losing her. And I have a feeling she knows.
She hasn't questioned me about my involvement with Giovanni anymore, but I catch her watching Enzo a lot with a frown on her face. And one time, she'd been our waitress when I sat in the VIP with Giovanni and Vito. It'd quickly become clear that she wasn't a fan of the men. The bright smile and light laughter she often shares with other clients had been nowhere to be found. And where the other waitresses would have tripped over their feet to serve and impress Giovanni, she'd taken her time.
I glance over my shoulder to find Enzo watching me. I hold up a finger to him before turning back around to look at Todd.
Time to do some investigating.
"What do you think she's doing then?" I ask, trying not to show too much interest, just a little bit of curiosity.
Todd narrows his eyes slightly before looking over at Dave who is busying himself with rearranging the liquor shelf. "You didn't hear this from me but there's whispers she has connections to Le Milieu."
My brows press together. "Who?"
"The French mafia." He peeks around again. "I think she's smuggling drugs for them."
My heart races in my chest and I bite down on the inside of my jaw.
This is the information I need.
"Is there any proof?" I keep my voice low.
He shakes his head. "None that I know of, but I'm sure it wouldn't take much snooping around for a person to find out." He backs away, giving me a tight smile. He raises his voice louder. "Well, like I said, got to get to my paperwork."
I press my lips together tightly to keep from asking him anything else. This nibble of information should be enough for me to work off of. It's not as if I'm going to just go to Giovanni with it without doing some investigating first, anyway. Amarie may have a couple different people living inside of her, but she's been mostly kind to me and I don't want to see her go down for something that she's wrongly accused of.
Even if it sounds a hell of a lot like she's dealing drugs out of the club.
Which is exactly what I'm looking for.
Shoving the information to the back of my mind, I grab my coat from the back. I wave to Dave and Angie on my way out. Enzo falls into step with me.
"Giovanni wants me to let you know you'll be attending a party with him next week," he tells me.
I glance up at him, finding him surveying our surroundings as we make our way to the car. "What kind of party?"
"One with a lot of powerful people."
So a mobster party, then.
