The Secrets That Find Us (The Devils Dust MC Legacy)

Coming out of my room this morning, chaos is heavy in the air as I spot something being thrown across the common room down the hall, and the sound of bottles smashing. Jesus, I can’t wait until I’m done prospecting so I can get my own place.

Scratching my chest, I yawn and make my way to the commotion, Zane sits at the bar with his head hung low, Shadow pacing around the room like a wild animal.

I stop and try to figure out what the fuck is going on.

Sensing my presence, Zane raises his head and looks my way, his eyes narrowing in with frustration.

“What happened?” I tread carefully, the look on Shadow’s face telling me he’s about to fucking snap.

“Delilah skipped town last night.” He fills me in and Shadow exhales roughly. He leans forward, both of his hands on the bar. “She’s so stupid for a smart kid.” He shakes his head. “I’ve told her once I’ve told her a dozen times, she is a woman of the club, my fucking daughter. She is not safe out there!”

I want to tell him she’s not a kid, but I don’t feel like having a bottle of Jack Daniels thrown at my head this afternoon. It’d be a fucking waste of whiskey for sure. I just saw Delilah last night. She couldn’t have gone far.

“Where is she going?” I already know the answer to this. Delilah mentioned she was leaving when she and I were helping paint Piper’s baby room. I got the sense that she was going to sneak off but she didn’t come out and say it. But for the sake of my nuts, I’m just going to act stupid for now. I wouldn’t put it past Shadow to have me tied to a chair and a pair of pliers gripped around my balls until I spill everything I know.

“Somewhere in Georgia!” Zane scoffs. “By herself.”

Sitting on a stool next to Zane, I rub my chin and nod. I don’t like the idea of her traveling by herself that far either, but if you knew Delilah, you’d know nobody had a say in the matter. Besides, even if I had known she was leaving on her own and snitched her out, when her dad got done dragging her ass back here, she’d fucking strangle me. I really wouldn’t put it past her, she’s more like her dad than she thinks.

“Do you want me to go get her?” Zane looks to his father, hesitation thick in his tone. I cross my arms. This ought to be good, him bringing his sister back. He’d come back with a bullet wound to the arm at the very least, and without his sister, that I know of. Delilah is not coming back unless she wants to.

“I don’t even know where the hell in Georgia she is,” Shadow replies, irritated, throwing his hands up in the air.

The doors to the kitchen open, Bobby walking into the room biting into an apple.

“Chill, when she gets to where she’s going we will call some of the clubs to look for her and we will find her in no time,” Bobby suggests calmly, sitting down at the bar on the other side of Zane. His blond hair in his eyes, and face clean shaven. He reminds me of a model or some shit, not a biker.

“Dad, just… just let her go,” Zane finally says, and Shadow slowly looks in his direction, his eyes darker than seconds before.

Bobby stops mid chew and stares at Zane like he’s lost his fucking mind offering such a stupid suggestion. I swallow hard, watching what happens closely. Telling a father to let his daughter go is no man’s job. Tell an outlaw that and you’re just fucking dumb.

“Let her go?” Shadow repeats with ridicule.

“Oh shit,” I mumble, glancing at Bobby from the corner of my eye.

“Yeah, she’s an adult, if she wants to go, let her go. You can’t keep tying her down,” he explains, but it sounds more like he’s just tired of dragging his sister out of the shit she digs herself into.

“If anyone of our enemies in Georgia finds out who Delilah is, she’s going to get hurt. She’s across the fucking country, Zane, and I can’t get to her if something happens!” he shouts, and with one clean sweep of his arm, he cleans the entire bar of beer and booze, all of it smashing into the wall.

The smell of beer and whiskey fill the room. Bobby shakes his head, and Zane’s hands roll into fists, trying to control his temper. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be Delilah’s big brother, I expect it’s like a rodeo clown trying to corral a wild bull. Which is probably why I’m so attracted to her. She’s free-spirited, ornery, and pistol! Chipped black nail polish, dark silky hair that frames her face, shirts that are a little baggy that gives a glimpse of her firm tits when she bends over, and fuck it I love it when she wears jeans she’s cut into shorts.
